Description |
Transcribed from photograph: "Transportation. Sleighs and sledges. B. S. Downing, Eagle & Dawson Stage Line. Leaving halfway station between Eagle and 40-mile." Downing was a Yukon mail carrier from 1897 to 1906. He also operated the B.S. Downing Eagle & Dawson Stage Line.; Exact location unknown. Eagle, Alaska and Forty Mile, Yukon are both on the Yukon River. Forty Mile is southeast of Eagle. Because Eagle is near the Alaska-Yukon border, any "halfway station" would almost certainly be well within the Yukon Territory. It looks like this may be exactly the same group of passengers as File:"B.S. Downing Eagle & Dawson Stage Line" crossing the boundary line on the Yukon, February 12, 1904 - DPLA - 8b096ea335e7a00a9093930e003186ed.jpg, which is photographed by Arthur Churchill Warner and dated precisely as February 12, 1904. If this is the same trip, this photo would have to be shortly before that. |
